Triumph Drummer and Metalworks Founder Gil Moore joined Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and Councilor Doug Ford to help rock out on the first birthday of The City with Mayor Rob Ford , their weekly Newstalk 1010 Radio Show. The surprise visit from Gil launched a rock-talk and music industry discussion that showed the Mayor’s genuine passion for music.

Mayor Ford attended many of Triumph’s over-the-top shows at Maple Leaf Gardens and recounted the sound, lights, lasers and pyro extravaganza in vivid detail. They discussed Universal’s upcoming Triumph documentary directed by Don Allan; Metalworks’ expansion into education and live events; and recent Triumph projects at Metalworks Studios. In commemoration of the show’s anniversary and the Fords’ enthusiasm for Triumph, Gil was happy to present Mayor Ford with a Double Platinum Triumph Rock ‘n Roll Machine album plaque.

According to Gil, “Triumph fans are the best, and Mayor Ford and Councilor Ford are no exeptions. They are great supporters of the Toronto music cluster and their efforts supporting Music Canada’s initiatives highlight Toronto’s vibrant music industry; Rob is truly the Music Mayor! ”

“Did we want to go…no,” muttered Levine. “But then we thought, it’s Sweden, what the heck, no one’s going to notice us out there. We couldn’t have been more wrong.”

Four great names were set in stone last night during the inaugural Mississauga Music Walk of Fame ceremony held at Memorial Park in Port Credit. The Class of 2012 — the Walk’s first honourees — included legendary rocker Ronnie Hawkins, Triumph drummer Gil Moore, opera singer Krisztina Szabo and late great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. Moore, the owner of the famous MetalWorks recording studio who has already been enshrined in both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, said there is a difference between national and local attention.

INDUCTION SPEECH:

If you can make your passion your profession, you will never have to do any real work again. It’s a philosophy that many men and women have dreamed of, but few have successfully executed. Pre-eminent among musicians who have transformed their careers on the stage into a business that hasn’t just survived off the stage, but has earned its stripes on the forefront of the Canadian music industry is Mississauga’s Gil Moore.

Everyone knows the story of Triumph, the Mississauga band who performed anthemic metal miracles in arenas around the world in the 1970s and 1980s, releasing more than a dozen albums, selling millions of records and eventually earning a place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. In 1978 the band opened its own private studio on Mavis Rd. so it could tinker with its songs and not have to worry about booking studio time. When Triumph stopped performing a decade later, Moore dedicated himself full-time to the studio. ”Who doesn’t want to work at Disneyland each day?” he said when asked about his motivation in launching the studio. It is a decision that Canadian musicians — and musicians everywhere — look back on with deepest gratitude.

Metalworks has gone from a hole-in-the-wall industrial unit, with 20 students, to a musical mecca that is now more than 17,000 sq .ft. in size and features six studios, state-of-the-art lighting and sound, and audio facilities and innovative teaching techniques that reflect its owner’s unmistakable stamp of professionalism — a word that isn’t always top of mind in many aspects of the music business. “Word of mouth from the artists is important,” Moore told The Mississauga News in an interview last year. ”I think trust is number 1.”

When the referrals are coming out of the mouths of artists with first-hand experience at Metalworks whose names are David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, The Cranberries, Rush, Prince, Tom Cochrane, Christina Aguilera, Guns ‘N Roses, Nelly Furtado, Anne Murray, Feist, and Metric, to name but a few — that’s a gold-plated endorsement. Metalworks was named Recording Studio of the Year at the Canadian Music Industry Awards for a dozen consecutive years – so often that it might as well have been renamed the Gil Moore Recognition Award.

With all of the accolades that Triumph and Metalworks have received, you might think that a little some of that might go to a person’s head. But Gil Moore remains the same native son of Mississauga, the same unpretentious guy who founded Gil Moore Audio as a teenager and attended Streetsville and T.L.Kennedy Secondary Schools. The same guy who always had a yen for construction – which may be why the never-ending expansion of Metalworks continues to this day.

If you need a Mississauga Idol judge or sponsor, Gil is there. The prize may be studio time for just the winner, but somehow, he finds time for the top three finishers to record.
Metalworks sponsors the Q107 Homegrown contest , which is no accident. Moore has always had a deep and abiding respect for homegrown talent and he’s always respected his roots — which were planted deep in Mississauga, where he still lives. He grew up in Erindale Woodlands and his parents, Martha and Herb, wrote columns for many years in The Mississauga News. One of those columns was called Suburban Style. The Moores would be infinitely proud to know that their son has come to epitomize his own form of suburban style — one grounded in respecting and teaching the entire business of music, from conception to performance to recording to marketing and beyond, to succeeding generations of musician.

Yes, Gil Moore is a wonderful musician, but we recognize him tonight for all the things he has done that make him so much more than that — those things that make him a true champion of his craft and a perpetual leader of his industry.

“It’s a different type of recognition in your own community,” said Moore. “It has a special feeling and a special meaning.” While growing up, Moore said, he was a fan of both Hawkins and Peterson. So, last night, he was elated to be in the their company and to be honoured with other accomplished musicians.

“Ronnie Hawkins is a legend,” said Moore. “And as a kid, I heard Oscar Peterson records over and over again.” While posing for photos with fans, Hawkins said, “I think it’s just wonderful,” in his famous southern drawl. “I’ve always loved ol’ Mississauga.” Szabo, who received a MARTY Award in 2005 from the Mississauga Arts Council, found it a little daunting to receive her plaque after the Hawk.“Ronnie Hawkins is a very hard person to follow — what a tribute,” she told the crowd. “I’m very proud to be from Mississauga.” During the closing remarks, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion declared: “Mississauga is growing up in a big way.” That’s exactly what Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey had in mind when he put forth the idea to city council.

“It used to drive me crazy when the media would talk about Gil Moore and Oscar Peterson and say they’re from Toronto,” Tovey said. “We’re not a city of 250,000 anymore, there’s 740,000 people in this city — that’s a big city.” Tovey said initiatives such as the Walk of Fame and the arts and culture office make Mississauga a cultural hotbed.

“We’re putting more and more money into arts and culture each year,” he said. “If we’re going to become a real stand-alone city, we’re going to have to have our own arts and culture identity.”

Moore agreed, saying “We’ve got some great achievers and some great monuments and some wonderful things to celebrate here.” Or, as Hawkins put it: “Mississauga starts things first, so Mississauga is rockin’.” Tovey said the Music Walk of Fame monuments have been constructed to last. “They’ll be there for a hundred years,” he said of the four-inch slabs. “There will be 40 more of them here, and school kids will be using them as projects to do history.”

On Saturday, September 8th, Mike Levine chatted with Rich Davenport of Total Rock Radio show in the UK. In the first hour of the two hour show, Mike Levine talks about the band’s reunion and subsequent comeback gig at the Sweden Rock Festival in 2008, and the CD-DVD that came from it.
“When we found out we were gonna play that gig, I mean, I was in Jamaica, and I borrowed a bass off of a guy that played in a band, put on a Triumph album and started to play along and went “Wow, Am I ever out of shape,” I couldn’t remember what key the songs were in or anything but after a couple weeks and some blisters on the fingers, I got it together and I came home, and we rehearsed every day, for almost a month. We played and played and played… and it worked out really good, I’m really happy with the end result.”

North American syndicated Rock radio show InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History’s Greatest Rock Bands heads north to Canada this week for the “Best of” Triumph as part of its Medium Rare series on InTheStudio.NET. Triumph members Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore sit down with InTheStudio host Redbeard for an honest, heart warming and hysterically funny interview about how this three-piece Toronto outfit made it in North America, first as an upstart live act and then as platinum selling recording artists. Drummer, songwriter, and vocalist Gil Moore tells host Redbeard how after years of playing in bands with multitudes of members, Triumph was designed as a three piece.

“The idea was really practical that we only wanted three musicians. We thought,’ there’s
never going to be a tie vote’. (Laughs) That sounds crazy but that was part of it. The whole idea about what we wanted to do musically, we were looking at bands like ZZ Top, Cream, Zeppelin…generally dealing with no rhythm guitar and no keyboards. That was part of the philosophy of what we wanted to do musically. We knew the limitations. I use to always say,’ In a three piece band there is no place to hide’.”

The full Triumph ‘Best of’/ InTheStudio program is available to stream online at
www.inthestudio.net as part of InTheStudio’s Medium Rare series. This program is in

Additionally, there are several bonus features, including the on site Triumph Press Conference, a cool “behind the scenes” at the festival, and a photo gallery. And if that wasn’t enough, included will be a full color 18 page booklet, including lyrics, credits, and photos.

“It’s great to finally be able show the world Triumph’s reunion show at the Sweden Rock Festival,” says Levine. “It certainly is one of the most memorable performances of our entire career! And they said it would never happen…”

The Canadian trio became one of the leading hard rock acts in the world during the ’70s and ’80s, with an arsenal of rocking, stadium-shaking anthems, and a magnificent light show that surpassed all of the competition.

Their classic albums ‘Just a Game,’ ‘Allied Forces,’ and ‘Never Surrender’ remain steady sellers, and all of the aforementioned Triumph songs remain rock radio staples – receiving steady play on Clear Channel iHeart Radio and Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

Rik performed as a guest artist with fantasy rock band “Sonic Elements” on a cover of the song ‘Red Barchetta’ which features drums performed by legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart via a music software sample library called “Neil Peart Drums” by Sonic Reality. Dave Kerzner, CEO and founder of Sonic Reality, put together a unique music project called “Sonic Elements” where various singers and musicians of progressive rock perform and record along with sampled musical elements from the music software Sonic Reality creates for musicians.

“At Sonic Reality we record (aka “sample”) the sounds of musical instruments and drum grooves so that musicians can use these deluxe sound elements in their own music on the computer or mobile devices.” says Kerzner “I created the Sonic Elements music project to not only show what these inspiring Sonic Reality sounds are like in musical context but to also explore giving songs an alternate reality with different fantasy combinations of musicians and authentic sounds.”

A premium example of such a fantasy rock scenario is ‘Red Barchetta’ featuring Rik Emmett which is another take on the classic Rush song with new life brought to it by Rik’s passionate performance and interpretation.

Here’s what Rik Emmett had to say about the project:
“It was such a great day in the studio, jamming out to Neil’s incredible tracks, getting to play virtual ‘basement band’ and laying down my versions of Geddy & Alex parts.
About the Sonic Elements project and Neil Peart Drums:

Dave Kerzner of the music software company Sonic Reality has headed up a unique “virtual fantasy rock band” called “Sonic Elements” combining the sounds and performances captured in Sonic Reality music software and sound library products such as Neil Peart Drums with performances of guest musicians like Rik Emmett on classic covers like ‘Red Barchetta’ by Rush. Collaborating through the use of the sample library “Neil Peart Drums” which was performed by legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart and recorded by top producer Nick Raskulinecz is something that any musician who owns the product can do. Neil’s digitally recreated DW® Snakes and Arrows drum kit in software or soon to be released audio grooves to play along to or loops can be used in any recording software on the Mac, PC or iPad™. To celebrate that concept Sonic Elements have been working up an entire Rush tribute album as well as original songs all built around Neil Peart Drums with various guest guitarists, bass players and vocalists including Rik Emmett (Triumph), Billy Sherwood (Yes, Circa), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree, Marillion) and many other classic and progressive rock musicians.

It has been 30 years since Triumph, Rik Emmett (guitarist/singer), Gil Moore (drums, vocals) and Mike Levine (bass, keyboards), released their classic and best album Allied Forces. I had the opportunity to review their entire catalog of remastered releases several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This time I get to do it again in vinyl LP format. The LP also includes a code for a digital download of the album on the band’s website for all of you that like to have it on your PC or iTunes.
Triumph was more than your everyday power trio. Their big sound led you to believe there were more than three guys making all of that great music. With two double threats in Emmett and Moore manning their instruments and fully capable of delivering the powerful vocals that each song demanded, this lineup always provided the goods. Emmett had the high pitched delivery while Moore had the more traditional rock band voice.

In this digital/download age we live in it is always a treat to step back in time and have a vinyl LP in your hand. The reissue has the inner sleeve covered with pictures on one side and the lyrics for every track on the other. Although you will not find it necessary to follow along with the lyrics because the vocals are very clear and they always were easy to pick up when you heard one of their songs.
If you are too young to remember “Magic Power,” hearing it now in this format will blow you away. Whether you remember listening to it on the radio constantly back in 1981 or you are new to the music of Triumph, this will be a treat. The 9 tracks the make up the album are very strong and any group would be hard pressed to duplicate the consistency of such a landmark release. At the time they were and still are referred to as prog-metal however they sound like a good rock band to me with nothing too complicated going on. I can see where there are some prog influences but there is not enough to tag them as prog-metal. Maybe there was back in 1981 but that no longer applies in 2011, as the genre has changed and advanced dramatically.

30 years later the music has not lost its appeal, in fact in has weathered the test of time very well thank you. Celebrating the release of this album 30 years ago is not the only reason to offer it in a package with an LP and other goodies like the band has on their site, it deserves to get all of this attention and give people another chance to relive the magic or begin another era of fans altogether.
The three men that were Triumph have plenty to celebrate and be proud of. There are not a lot of bands around today making rock ‘n’ roll this timeless. Get your hands on a copy of the vinyl LP version of Allied Forces before it becomes another sought after collector’s item with an outrageous price tag on it. You can get just the album for around $25.00 or order a package that includes the LP, signed poster, letter from the band, keychain, and a T-Shirt for $49.99.

Key Tracks: Magic Power, Allied Forces, Fight The Good Fight
