    Utica, N.Y. !!
Did you ever read Good Enough to Dream by Roger Kahn? About the 1983 Utica Bue Sox, a minor league baseball team.
    Cool book.

I played short for that game, if we have a game today I'm going to pitch...if the rain holds off, went 0-3 in our first game with a walk...wasnt so great ...

So you're a pitcher Knetzke ... any specialty pitches or do you wind up and let 'er rip ... and BTW 0-3 (with a walk) for a pitcher isn't too bad ... especially in the junior league ... you know ... the one the Brewers moved too a few years ago ... biggrin.gif

Anyway ... I too was a pitcher in my youth. During the peak of my "career" I reached the low to mid '80's on the gun (but I honestly admit I didn't have too much control when I reached those speeds). My father taught me how to throw a knuckleball at an early age and that serve me well for a period of time (especially mixed in with my 70-80 heaters). I remember playing catch in the yard with my father at a young age and I'll be damned if every throw back to me wasn't a knuckball. I would always come into the house afterward with bruises all over my shins from those darn pitches ... literally you don't know where the ball is going to go ... took one off the ol' noggin' once too ... closed my mit on a high throw and SURPRISE the ball wasn't there any longer and bonk ... right off the top of my head. I truly feel for those who have to swing a bat against Tim Wakefield's "floaters". From experience I know exactly what they're dealing with. Can you throw a knuckler Knetzke? or do you too consider it just a junk/trick pitch that doesn't belong in the game (I hear that a lot).

Good luck with your game ...

What ... the Midol doesn't kick in until late summer? What's Steinbrenner thinking investing in that bunch of yahoo's you call ball players? There's a reason it's been 6+ years since the Yankees have done anything in MLB ... it's called heart ... and how can the Yankees be a "team" with that bunch of overpriced personalities. Now ... the Red Sox on the other hand have cut loose the fat (which is kind of tough to accept and let go as a fan given just 2 year ago they reach the pinnacle as a team) and invested in the future. It will be interesting to see how things shake out ....

... and May 1-2, 9,10,11 have been circled on my calendar since the start of the year ... LET THE GAMES BEGIN ...

Oh ... and every now and then it's nice to get away for awhile ... but like a Poltregeist "I'm Back ..."

ahh, with ya on the Expo thing...i remember as a young lad heading to the big O with dad watching doublehaders on a sunday loving Larry Parrish on the hot corner and Dave Cash at 2nd and wondering why Spier at Short just couldn't cut it....getting all excited when Valentine took Carlton (of the Phillies) deep, or when they played this wicked musical intro whenever the 'Hawk' came to bat...getting amazed that a guy like Woody Fryman and his, shall we say atypical physic, getting people out before the big closer, Elias Sosa would come in and mow them down....anyway, where are thou 'les expos'...definitely not a general....sniff

Dave Cash is from Utica, NY same hometown as mine. I'am a Phillies fan,and reading these quotes brings back some great memories.

....then you must have loved the true 'bull' Greg Luzinski and McBride and his magical 'fro'...how did his hat ever stay on?!

it just seems (real or imagined on my part) that ball players around that time had a little more style, more flow.....who out there today uses a toothpick to chew on (instead of gum or tobaco) like Claudel Wasgington of the KC Royals, or (for you Yank fans) the knumbchuck/acrobatic bat flip everytime Mickey Rivers missed a pitch...pure joy, baby

How about Oscar Gamble's hair, was that cool or what. I loved the "Bull". I have to savor the one world series they won in 1980. Over 100 yrs in existence and only one WS. 0-4 this year already. Bring back the Bull & Michael Jack Schmidt! and some pitching too. Actually have not read Roger Kahn's book on Utica Blue Sox but I lived thru it.
They were like a class A Yankees team filled with aging minor leaguers.

    Re: Baseball team?

SNASL glad to see you're back again, I missed you there for a week or so, I do throw a knuckler..just have gotten away from it for a while now...I threw it way to inconsistently, did mess around with it on JV freshmen year though, struck a kid out on it..definatly belongs in the game, its not a junk pitch...if you have a good one then its probably one of the most unhittable pitches in the majors, the other day...Thursday I pitched, it was ugly-umpire sucked, zone was tiny...I walked 7 in 4 innings, struck out 7, and gave up I think 3 hits-no ball was even hit on the fly to the outfield, all groundballs, 3 runs, 2 earned...100 pitches..ha 25 pitches an inning lol, threw 39 in the first, they fouled off so many pitches with 2 strikes it was incredible...all way behind it, it was pretty cold and rained a lot, dirt kept getting packed under my spikes, and I couldnt go out of the wind-up, so I was going from the stretch for pretty much the whole game, I locate pretty well, even when I really try to throw it hard(this year maybe 90ish when I really let it go, otherwise I'd say mid 80's..low 80's somewhere in there) but the fricken two seam fastball...ugh the harder I threw it the more it would end up in the dirt, just didnt stop moving..which sucked because I couldnt throw a strike with it..but thats how it goes some nights, I threw 54 strikes and 46 balls, but it was bad, I threw one batter 4 pitches and walked him, 3 were strikes, like not even borderline, but we won 13-3 in 5 innings, and won again on friday against the conference champs from a different(more difficult conference) conference last year 9-4, so we're 3-0 as a team and we havent even been playing very well, pitching has been good no one can hit us really, they're all getting on by walks, I have high expectations for us this year now..I wasnt sure how good we'd be but its pretty damn good so far. I did have the hit in the night game we won by 10 to put us up by 10 in the top of the 5th..little fister over the 2nd basemens head to score a pair...I'll take it

On to the Brew Crew!! whoo! oh yeah..5-0 now, Turnbow has 4 saves already, they won it in the bottom of the 9th today, last night Dave Bush pitched 7 innings of 2 hit ball while striking out 7...and one walk I believe, the pitching staff is great so far this year, then getting Big Ben back will help(I wear his number this year for baseball) in a rehab start in AA Huntsville he threw 2 2/3 and struck out 5 and allowed 1 run I think, solid performance...so he's looking good, Prince Fielder ripped the ball last night..so he's starting to see it better, watch out...if the Brewers keep this up the NL Central may be theres(I hope!)

    Go Brewers!!!

    Go Brewers!!!

I enjoyed the read on your outing. Keep posting on your games if you'd like. Reminds me of the day I used to be as skinny and active as Pedro (Martinez) ... now I'm totally like Big Poppy (Ortiz) without the "poppy" in my softball bat ... see that's what happens to ball players Knetze ... you revel in the game in your youth and then before you know it you migrate to co-ed slow pitch softball (where they alternate men and women balls ... the womens are like larger baseballs ... the guys are like a big puffy sponge).

Anyway ... the Brewers are looking (suprisingly) good this year. Thought they were toast again being in the same division as St. Louis. Looks like there's hope ...

    Re: Baseball team?

Game yesterday for me, we won 12-11...I threw 6 2/3 innings, struck out 12, walked two, 5 runs were earned, the wind was really blowing out to left, I hate having the dugout call pitches, I can call my own game!! I'm going to talk to them about that I think, its a lot easier throwing what you want rather than what the guy sitting in the dugout does. In the 7th inning, I struck out 4 batters and two outs were recorded...catcher cant throw the ball to 1st on a curve in the dirt to get the out, he had 3 errors like that yesterday, then we brought in another pitcher, he struck out that batter, so we had 5 k's in one inning and gave up 3 runs on 1 hit and 2 errors. As a team we have an on base percentage of .487 through our first 4 games(4-0). I finally started to hit the ball last night, first pitch I saw I hit a ground rule double, next at bat, hit a foul ball that got out of the park..ended up striking out though, smoked a line drive between short and 3rd...and flew out to center in my last at bat...we made 5 errors in the game, and we're still winning, if we would play better defense we'd be really smoking some teams. The 12 k's is a career high for me, and it came against one of the better teams I've pitched against...so now have 19 k's in 10 2/3 innings this year, thats a lot higher than last season...which is what I was hoping for.

Brewers now-Ben Sheets made a minor league rehab start last night throwing 5 1/3 innings, he struck out 9 and allowed only 3 hits and walked 1...threw 75 pitches, expect to see him start against the Mets sunday-I can't wait!!! I think I heard he had a hit in that game too, which is much more of a shock than his pitching performance lol(he's a horrible batter)

Um, that's no longer appropriate, considering they won it in 2004, erasing a 3-0 lead to the Skankees along the way. Surely you remember that historical collapse.
